 ódź are collected as Elder of the Jewish Council in the Łódź Ghetto from 19
 39-1944. These form a basic source base for research into this closed area 
 of Łódź during the German occupation of the city in World War 2. Many years
  of work on securing\, developing and digitising the archives will shortly 
 be concluded by copies of them being made available online.\nThe iconograph
 ic material is of particular documentary value. Much of this is already kno
 wn from exhibitions\, films and publications. The last four albums are curr
 ently undergoing conservation\, they have never been presented before due t
 o being so badly preserved. Hiding files\, sometimes by burying\, damaged t
 hem. However\, this did allow them to survive\, as they were not discovered
  by the Gestapo.\nWe are making the documentation of the conservation work 
 and images of these documents available for the first time. These are on ca
 rdboard with traces of damp and spillages\, and other minor blemishes. It w
 as a great challenge to preserve the photographs\, used in large amounts in
  collages\, which also contain coloured graphs\, drawings and inscriptions

 age? Does ghetto in the 21st century mean coercion and the need for isolati

  it influence our mentality? Participants at the exhibition will attempt to
  answer these questions - students and lecturers from Łódź's Academy of Fin
 e Arts\, and invited guests with the aid of various forms of artistic expre
 ssion. Works of a social or documentary nature\, taking the form of a manif
 esto or message\, reflective poems or stories. An important element is the 
 local context - the history of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto and the contemporar

 eople from Lodz\, nearby town and villages and also from cities of Western 
 Europe – like Vienna\, Berlin or Prague – went through the Lodz ghetto form
 ed in 1940. Imprisoned within an area of less than 4 square kilometres\, th
 ey were forced to do gruelling work for German war economy in accordance wi
 th the motto of the Chairman of the Jewish Council of Elders\, Chaim Rumkow
 ski: “Our only way is to work”. Effort\, hunger and disease decimated priso
 ners of the ghetto. For inhabitants of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto there was\,
  however\, a ‘terra incognita’ through which they could go by tram. Behind 
 the wire\, in crowds of emaciated people\, they could sometimes notice a fa
 miliar face. What is interesting is the fact of using trams within the ghet
 to to transport goods\, workers and\, during the deportation process\, peop
 le sent to the Radegast Station\, which was the last stop before their jour
